Welcome To ‘Backpacking With Baby’

Hello and thanks for visiting! This site is dedicated to traveling with babies and small children, and more specifically to traveling that’s just a bit more adventuresome than your average family vacation. Nothing too unusual, but more adventurous than driving a few hours to a condo at the beach or lake.

When my wife and I tell others that we’re traveling to faraway places with our toddler, we often get a reaction like “I hope you know what you’re getting into”, or “How could a baby possibly have fun being dragged from country to country”.

Even Rick Steves, the European-traveling guru who is all about taking the road less traveled claims that the best place to take your kids when you go to Europe is “to Grandma’s house on the way to the airport”. It’s this kind of thinking that really causes people to think that going to different states or different countries with kids is not worth thinking about. People everywhere are missing out on priceless adventures with their kids because they think they couldn’t handle it.

With this website, we hope to dispel this false notion, and give advice to those who do wish to experience the world with their kids, no matter how young they may be. So sit back, relax, and get ready for some fun and exciting adventures!

Hi, we would like to go on an around the world trip (backpacking, 6 - 12 months) with a newborn baby and wondered if anyone has experience in doing something similar. We are contemplating to buy a trailer or a minivan in which we can sleep. We are also thinking about which countries would be feasible. Any suggestions?

Wow! That sounds like quite a trip! My experience with backpacking with babies is limited to North America and Western Europe, but I would love to take an around the world trip, and I don’t see any reason not to take the kids along.

Depending on how ‘adventuresome’ you are, I would think that nearly any country that is generally considered “safe for travel” would be fine, and over 80% of the countries in the world probably meet that description.

If you use a trailer or minivan, that’s all the better, since the infant will be guaranteed a comfortable place to sleep, and that (along with being well-fed) is the primary concern. Keeping your child entertained certainly won’t be an issue, as traveling the world is entertainment enough for just about anyone!

Best of luck to you in your travels, and please keep us posted on your adventures. I can’t wait to hear about them!

    Robert
